Federal & State Aid

Grad school is an investment, but there is federal aid to help you pay for it. Unlike college, it's mostly in the form of loans or work-study. However, after you factor in grants, fellowships, and assistantships, it can help make grad school a reality.

The Need Factor
All grad students are considered independent for financial aid purposes. If you're married, you will need to share information about your spouse's finances. To qualify for federal aid, you must demonstrate need:

  • COA (Cost of Attendance) - EFC (Expected Family Contribution) = Need

This little equation, calculated with the Federal Methodology, has a big impact on your bottom line. It will help you determine how much you can borrow or earn through work-study, if you choose to do so. While you're enrolled, you'll be able to defer your federal undergraduate loan payments, but keep in mind how much you'll owe when all is said and done.

Billions of Dollars, One Application: The FAFSA
A single form serves as the application for all government aid. File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and find out what you're expected to contribute and how much help you'll qualify for.

Big important FAFSA rules:

  • Submit your form ASAP after January 1
  • Everyone should apply
  • Respond immediately to requests for more information

Tax Breaks and Tuition
There are more ways to save on tuition than squirreling away your pennies and searching for scholarships. Under a program promoted by the IRS, you can receive tax breaks if you paid tuition for yourself, a spouse, or a child.

The fastest way to complete the FAFSA (and get results) is online. Use the links below to get started.
